I love the comfort this season brings with its perfect weather, warming colors and the reminder for us to make changes in our lives. Especially since September has been dubbed “Self-Improvement Month.”

6 Ways You Can Celebrate Self-Improvement Month

Self-improvement is a never-ending process. But, when you keep your focus on it, you will live a much longer, happier and more prosperous life. I'm sure you have heard the phrase, "You can't take better care for others, if you can't take better care for yourself." Well, there is a lot of truth in that statement.

What are you doing now to self-improve?

Some likely examples include the following areas of improvement:
1. Personal – image improvements
2. Professional – career growth
3. Family and Friends – better relationships
4. Wellness -- eat healthier, exercise more
5. Spiritual – count your blessings, appreciate nature
6. Your living space – clear the clutter

The first step in making improvements is knowing what you want to improve. We can help with number one: Personal Image.

It’s a fact when you look good you feel good! Self image perceptions can add up and take away self-confidence that can affect us being the best parent, partner or friend that you can be.

How to implement desired improvements:
1. Make a commitment to the improvement

4. Celebrate once achieved!

Here is a fun and connecting exercise that addresses all of numbers one through six that I started to do with my family that I wanted to share for you to do with yours. During your next healthy meal together, go around the table and ask each person to blurt out the first thing that comes to mind that they want to improve upon. Then, discuss as a family on ways you can help support them achieve their goal by scheduling an uninterrupted "personal hour" designated towards that goal. Next, set a reasonable time-frame (3-4 months) when you can celebrate your consistent efforts with a family reward!

The goal from this exercise is to live a happier, healthier and more productive life. It also helps tighten the bond between family members while still allowing for personal care time. Ask me to share more details that may help you overcome some of your own challenges.

Most important, especially now, is staying positive and doing our part in staying healthy. Physical activity, self-confidence and positive affirmations release certain endorphins that helps keep our momentum rolling, making no stops for illness.

Best Healthy Apple Crisp Ever!

This healthy Apple Crisp is naturally sweetened with maple syrup and topped with a crunchy pecan-oat topping.

For the topping:
• 1/3 cup whole wheat pastry flour (gluten free oat or almond flour)
• ½ cup old fashioned rolled oats (gf if desired)
• 1/3 cup brown sugar (or coconut brown sugar)
• ½ cup raw chopped pecans
• ¼ tsp salt
• ¼ cup cold butter or vegan buttery stick cut into small cubes
For the crisp:
• 5-6 medium Honeycrisp or Granny Smith Apples, peeled, cored and very thinly sliced
• 1/3 cup pure maple syrup
• 1 tsp cinnamon
• Pinch of nutmeg
• 1 TBS vanilla extract
• Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Generously grease an 8x8 baking pan
• To make the topping: combine flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and pecans in large bowl. Add the pieces of butter and mix until mixture becomes wet and crumbly. Place topping in the fridge.
• To make the filling: place apples, maple syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla in a large bowl and toss to combine. Let sit for 5-10 minutes.
• Take 1/3 cup of the topping and mix it into the apple mixture.
• Place apple mixture in prepared plan and sprinkle evenly with topping.
• Bake the crisp for 45-55 minutes or until topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
• Let cool for 10 min on a wire rack.
